General Discussion / AK Ertl procedure
« on: June 02, 2013, 07:20:10 PM »
Hey Everyone!

First, I would like to thank everyone on the board or their valuable information. I became an AK nearly 3 years ago now (due to a motorcycle accident) and this forum has been an invaluable source of information. I have since gotten a C-Leg and am walking nearly as well as before the accident  :). Thank you very much for the support and information!

However, as a young and formerly very active person, I am never completely satisfied  :(. I am not able to end bear or put weight on my stump. I want to get back to doing grappling and jiu-jitsu and would need to be able to put substantial weight and need the ability to push off from my stump.

I have heard from my prosthetist that with the Ertl procedure, it is very possible gain the ability to bear weight and put one's entire weight on the tip of the stump. Has anyone here had the procedure performed or have any experience with it? Thanks again!

 :) :)

General Discussion / Insurance and pre existing conditions
« on: December 09, 2011, 02:02:38 AM »
Hey all,

Was wondering if anyone here have any insurance tips. I am currently on cobra but it's about to run out. I work for a small business so I do not have group insurance available. As an amputee with pre existing conditions, are there anyway I can find an insurance policy that covers prosthetics? Any tips would be hugely appreciated.

General Discussion / Stump volume control, questions
« on: August 19, 2011, 08:14:34 AM »
Hey everyone, I am finally walking again after my accident last year! It is an awesome feeling.

However, I am not without problems with my prosthetic. It's very inconsistent. On the good days, there is no pain at all but it can very well hurt like crap the next day. I think my limb volume changes way too much day by day to have a consistent fit in my above knee socket. Any one have any tips other than wearing a shrinker to keep my stump volume consistent? Thanks!

General Discussion / Newbie amputee, have some questions
« on: December 12, 2010, 02:10:18 PM »
First of all I would like to say thanks. I have been lurking on these boards for a month and have found the info here extremely helpful. It has given me hope. I was in a motorcycle accident 3 months ago that took my right leg just above the knee.

I have been working with Hanger (dont know any better) and I just got my temporary prosthetic, a Mercury unit made by Endolite. Right now I'm not too concerned of how well the knee works. I am however worried about my socket. The one I got seems to be too big and I am getting a lot of pressure on the bottom of my stump. Where is the bulk of the pressure supposed to be allocated? My socket seems to be too long as well, making my knees asymmetric (good knee is located higher than the other). Should I be worried about this? It certainly looks like crap when I'm sitting down with pants on.

Thanks in advance!
