Title: update on getting my new legs
Post by: pegleg jack on April 09, 2009, 09:25:28 PM
well today was the day i was supposed to get my test legs to test drive, quess what we never made it to his office, and we are without a car or transportation, was about 5 miles from his office and was stopped in traffic and got rear ended by a F150 three quarter ton pickup towing a trailer with a backhow on it, spent all afternoon in the emergency room in TYLER, TEXAS ETMC HOSPITAL, NO major damage tous, but am going to be good an sore tommarrow, because i tensed up  when i saw it cominig, as of right now i dont even know how bad the car is messed up, the medics got us out of the car and on the way to the hospital before i could even  talk to the police officer investigating the accident, and my wife is going to be the same way, he hit us so hard that it moved our car four feet into the car infront of me, and locked us togeather, i know that cause i tried to back up so that we could get the cars out of the middle of the road, so until we get some transportation of some kind my new legs are but on the back burner so to speak, at least i have found out that my insurance is not going to take a hit, by having to pay for the car i was pushed into, like some states that i know of and one is CALIF, cause we had that happen to use when we lived out there. We have already run up no heck of a hospital bill, four differant CAT-SCAN, two on each of us, they did my whole back and head on me, the wife thinks that they did the same on her.s plus the ambulance trip to the hospital.  so we are going to have to watch our selfs for a few days to make sure nothing is wrong and if any thing show up. Well here i am venting agian, so i hope that you all can put up with me on this one just needed to get off my chest so to speak,

Really bad luck on that PLJ, though at least you and your wife are both ok and not more seriously hurt.  A slightly smaller vehicle, than the one that hit you, did the same to me in my car about 15 years back, turned out the guy wasn't insured and I lost my no claims.  I always find being without my car difficult, so know how you feel, feel free to vent. Take care of yourselves.

cant go up today, have to stick around the house to take the calls from the insurance companies, and a least i know that the company that he worked for has insurance, how much i dont know an going to call and get a copy of the police report sent to me so that i can see and find out just how much i can do on my end and keep the ball rolling to get me a new or fixed set of wheels.

Sorry to hear about your wreck, Jack. Doesn't your insurance company provide a rental? Because the other guy was at fault, I would think his insurance would have to provide a rental. Also your car warranty may provide a rental. My new honda has coverage that gives me a rental up to $50/day at no cost to me. My ford pickups had the same coverage but it has expired now that the trucks are 5 years old. I live out in the country and could not get by one day without wheels. My youngest girl just totaled her 3 year old car - no insurance. The accident was her fault and since the car is my name, the bills are coming to me. At least you were not hurt. Hope everything returns to normal soon. Herb

Glad to hear that you and your wife weren't seriously injured.  You are really going to be sore tomorrow!!!I hope you have heating pads and ice packs around, you might need them.  Hope you feel better soon.  Working with insurance companies is a horror story.  You pay and pay and pay, then when you have an accident they look for a reason not to cover it.    Annieg

Here is the latest on this mess, finialy got to see the car yesterday and it looks like it may be a total. is it is am going to try and force his insurance company to replace it, being the fact that they have admitted fault on this, and he was cited with the following items
1. failure to control speed
2. backed without safety(not sure what that means)
3. unsafe lane change.

The wife and i are okay so far, an like i told his insurance company that there may something show up in a couple of day, we dont know, the soreness is going away in my shoulders, and the wife say the same thing.

The only thing so far is that my old buddy PHANTOM has showed up and not much can be done about it, thing it is mostly nerves cause i am wound up tighter than a 10 day clock.

Homemade Whiskey - How to make Whiskey at home

The making of homemade whiskey through home distilling is an absolutely fascinating hobby. it really dates back to the times when farmers and home steaders made there own, and it was in these times that the Whiskey rebellion caused all sorts of political unrest...

Well thanks for all of your helpfull ideas, and STEVE, if i am not wrong and have read it some where that a person can distill 1 or two gallons a year for thier own personal use, I know that you can make your own beer, havent tried it yet, we tried making some wine and that was a desaster, wound up with wine all over the place, bottlles started to explode, and it was in our basement where i was raised, the family dosent own it any more but it is still standing and a real good family owns it,

Ann, 10 miles is just a tad far tp crawl me thinks, dont want blisters on my knees LOL

To-all, here is the latest, got a call from the insuance company and they are going to scrape out my old car and give me 5065.83 for it, have an appointment with a lawyer this next week to find out it i can sue to get  them to pay for my new car which we put 5000.00 down on today and it is not a new one , but a used one at that , has onll 34,000 miles on it and it is a 2007 ford focus, if you want to see it type in ladeford.com and to the pre owned section and it is the 2007 ford focus 4d sedan tan color, so it is still on the manufature warranty of 60,000 miles and they told me that it may be extended by the previous owner to 75,000 and that the extra 15000 is still good on it, am having new hand controls put in it, dont know which ones that is going to be install but do know that is going to cost around 980.00 for it installed. Have gotten my legs as of yet, hopefully i will get them on moday when i go into to see my CPO, and still get to test drive them i hope. Also going to have to buy and have installed the tow bar cause my old one would not fit the new car, the width is differant and a 2000 lbs tow bar comes in handy every now and then.

The only good news that has happened today is we got a round trip all expensices payed trip to LAS VEGAS, so we are going to take that one along with 100 dollars worth of gas and a 40 gift card we can us at WALLY WORLD, for what ever we need or want. So that one i gave to the little women for her to get what ever she wants. How we got this was we bought into a resort village set up and got a real good deal on it and it is only about 45 mins from where we live and it right on LAKE PALISTINE, and they have two of them on the lake that we can use. and it only cost up 75 dollars a night for a two bedroom, 2 bath condo, plus free use of oll of the other thing that they offer. one i like is the fact they have a riding stable on one there and can go horseback riding, am going to try after i get my new legs, am a little scared to try with my pin/lock legs i have now, for i am a agressive rider and dont want to unlock one of my legs and have it come off and scare the blazes out of the horse and i get thrown off. And plus having somewhere to go fishing on the lake, i can also rent a boat or phonton boat and go out on the lake itself, So in ending this it seems like i am finally getting up in this worlld, never thought that i would ever have what i have now.

PLJ,

Won't your health insurance pay for the hand controls....I would try.  You are a veteran;  will they pay for the addition of controls?
at this point I would try them all.  And I am glad I am in contact with a celebrity.  At least some good came from all this.  Hope you win alot of money in Vegas and have fun at Lake Palistine.

Ann, thanks didnt thing about that on my medical insurance and as for goverment, i am only 20% disabled so it would cover it.

And will try and win some money, one thing we are going to do is, go when our old bowling league goes up there for thier sweeps, so that we can see some  of our old friends that weekend.

Havent really read everything that i can use up at the lake resort yet. but do know now i have someplace that i can go fishing at and take the wife and enjoy ourselfs while we are there.

Am still going to start working on people to get it change on the insurance companies about not replacing the cars, maybe not for me so much as for others that are having it happen to them, sometimes this old computor comes in handy.

Hello Jack - have you looked into buying a new car? There are some incredible bargains out there right now. I bought a new car at thanksgiving time and wish I had waited till now. I could have gotten the next better model for $3000 less than I paid. I know ford will pay up to $2000 for handicap adaption to a vehicle, maybe other manufacturers do the same. herb

Wlell i have good news and bad news for you-all today, so i will give you the bad first and then the good,

Didnt get my legs like i hoped, the test sockets didnt fit right and i couldnt get my right stump all the way down into it, and the rest need to go to a differant post, we are loosing one of our dogs today, dont know what has hit him, but in the last 4 days he has lost his sight and hearing and is unable to get up and walk, dosent eat, just drinks water, so i am going to have to have him put down this morning.

Now for the good news, call that guys insurance company, STATE FARM MUTUAL AUTO, and told them that by law i need hand controls to drive any car, and they asked me for the name of the company installing the controls in our car that we are buying and wanted them to send the invoice to them.Will know today cause they are coming to the house to get the title of the old car and pay us off, and it looks like our new used car will be ready today or tommarrow. So hopefully that is 980.00 that i dont have to come up with out of my own pocket.
All for today, gots to get out and go to work on stuff i am doing around here.

PLJ.

I am so sorry about your dog...I had a basset that ate some of my houseplants and that is exactly the way he acted.  It poisoned him..they got him in time though.

Another thing I thought of...did he have his parvo{sp} shots?  And so glad you are about to get some wheels!!

PLJ, I'm sorry to hear about your dog.  I agree with Ann's post, it sounds like maybe he got into something he shouldn't have.  Perhaps antifreeze?  It is a very common poison to cats and dogs.  Regardless, I'm sorry about your dog.  Pets are family members and it is difficult to say goodbye.  It's hard to be a good pet owner and know when to say goodbye and make the painful decision to help them cross the rainbow bridge with dignity.  You gave your dog a loving and caring home and he loved you for it.  As you know, your heart will heal with time.  My thoughts are with you.

PLJ, it's nice to hear some good news from you.  Hopefully you will have your new car with your hand controls very soon.  I hope you and your wife are healing from the accident.  Hopefully the stiffness and soreness are diminishing.

Don't worry about getting your new legs.  It will happen.  I went thru a dozen temporary sockets and one definitive socket before I finally got the carbon fiber socket I have now.  It seemed like every socket needed to be modified and/or my residual limb kept changing.  After 14 months I finally ended up with what I consider to be a perfect fitting socket.  You will get there.  Hang in there.

Here is the latest, havent got my legs yet, went monday to get them but the sockets didnt fit right so i didnt get to wear them. Go in next monday the 27, and hopefully will get them then.

The insurance company came through and gave me a good price for my old car, and we have the new one and they also payed for my hand controls so now i am all set up and am driving it, it has some items that we didnt have on the old one and one is cruise control, and that is a real big help if driving for a long time and distance. and also found out that my insurance went down on the newer car. not much but what the heck every little bet helps out.

HIP, HIP HORRAY, got my test legs yesterday and what a differance, am walking a lot straighter and standing tall not leaned over liike i was with my old ones, going to take some time to get used to the vac system and haveing to put on the sleeve, and the renegade feet i got with the system is WOW, all ready fallen in love with them, found out that i can walk down slight inclines with out having to crab foot it down and stairs i have found out are easier now that my legs fit tight, now when i move my stumps my legs go with them right away, didnt have that with the pin/lock system. And am only using half of the amount of vac that can be used, have them set at 10 and they feel tight as i set here and vent this out this morning. also i can drive for a long distance and not have to take my legs off like i had to before, cause i dont have the pinching behind my knees like before. if everthing works out this week will get my carbon sockets next week or the week after.

That is great news Jack. Hope that they are both comfortable perfect fits. I went in today to get recast and was told that while I have been on crutches since last January, there has been significant contracture of the muscles and I can no longer hold my residual leg straight. I have to do exercises to try to straighten them out. A transformer caught fire today at my prosthetist's building, so they could not complete my test socket. Herb

well its been almost week now and you anit gonna believe this, have had to add a 2 ply sock to my right leg and a single ply to my left leg, that is how much i have shrunck since i got them and still have a great fit and am getting used to the knew feet, i am able to stand and walk longer than before, so i know i have made a good choice, sometimes have trouble getting a good seal on my right leg usually takes me two times to get it right, but am learning what it takes to do all of this. Need a seperate suitcase just for all of my battery chargers and legs extras now, two for my legs,  one for my cell, and one form my razor. it is a great feeling to get a pair of legs that really fit and fit good, and i am somewhat a test person for my leg man cause this is the first time he has attemted to make this type of system.
Ann, you are right no wobbling when i move my stump my legs go with it, so that gives me better control when walking.

Also found out that the tech that made my sockets is also a right BKA, So there is another plus, and he has done this type of system before so that also helps, that old saying been there done that comes to play.

My nest appointment is the 5 of may.

 Jack-
        What sleeves are you using with your new Limblogic legs?
Title: Re: update on getting my new legs
Post by: pegleg jack on May 11, 2009, 09:03:04 AM
Tigartatts, right now i am using the OWW ALPHA FLEX SLEEVE and they seem to be doing okay, the only problem i am having is getting it to seal between my socket and the vacuum unit, other than that i love them, am walking a lot better and seem to have better  control when walking, the system give a faster response when i move my legs.
Title: Re: update on getting my new legs
Post by: Tigertatts on May 11, 2009, 07:55:48 PM
I had 3 different OWW Alpha Flex Sleeves and they all failed with in a week or 2 of use. one was defective and we returned it and it's replacement NEVER did seal right, not knowing any better i would of thought i had a leak between my socket and the pump but it was the sleeve that was again defective right out of the box, has a pin hole in it somewhere in the cloth area where you can't see it. Anyways I would suggest trying the Otto Bock Derma Proflex Sleeves. They are MUCH thinner and flex about 3 times better than tha Alpha sleeves, the otto bock sleeve is also ALOT stronger and lighter at the same time allowing much better knee bend. As i messaged you before, myself and a friend of mine using this system both have found the O-Ring between the pump and the socket to be faulty and leaks. I have found the best test to see where the leak is, is to use electrical tape and tape up the hole in the bottom of the socket, if the pump continues to run I used a thick hand lotion (or vasoline works too) to fill the gap on the outside of the socket and the pump. I filled the entire gap around the pump/socket joint and got the pump to hold full vacuum. If you can get the pump to stop running and hold vaccum this way then you can slowly wipe off the lotion till you find the area of the leak. By taping the hole in the bottom of the socket you can issolate just the pump and the connection to the socket. If the pump holds vacuum after taping the hole up then your leak will be in the socket itself (possible crack or hole in the lamination) or in the sleeve.

tIGERTATTS, we are doing this same thing, only i cant use the vaseline yet because the units are loaners and i dont get mine until friday the 15th, am just about ready to use some locktite super glue around the seal area and seal them permantly, but then agian it will void the warranty on them so i was told, and even using RTV and not OOW'S will also void it on use, so we were told. Will find out more on friday when i go in to have my units changed and will pass on to him about useing vaseline and see what he says.

THANKS for all of the information, for both of us are new at this, this is the first pair that he has made, and is using me as a guinee pig so to speak.

How I fixed mine and won't void the OWW warranty,  Go down to the auto parts store and get a roll of their thin gasket cork (should be about 8 bucks) then cut out a a gasket that is the exact same shape as the entire top of the Limblogic unit. cut out the 4 bolt holes the same size and then cut out the big hole around the vac port but cut this hole a little bigger (this allows room for their o-ring gasket to flaten out and seal the best it can) then insert gasket between Limblogic unit and socket and tighten bolts to OWW torq specs. Ive yet to figure out why OWW didn't use a full body gasket in the first place and went with that goffy O-ring.

hERE IS the latest on  my legs, i have them but am having major poblems on the sleeve that is used for sealing the system, the alpha flex to me are a piece of junk, had one fail already and look like the other one isnt going to last much longer, and the bad part is the warrraty is only 90 days from the time they shipp it, so if it take a week to get it you only have 2 and half months or so under warranty, and a nother dumb thing is that they told us that we had to tape the lower edge that was on my socket to insure that we had a good seal. Have already sent OWW CO. a nasty e-mail telling them what i thought of thier sleeve and how it was made, dont know if i will get an answer back or not, and i voided the warranty by trying to fix the dang thing and it didnot work, have it laying here in front of me now., had to get the serial number off of it so that they would know that i actually had it and not just someone trying to start trouble.

We are trying the DURA GEL Suspendion sleeve made by silipos, but he is afriad that me being real active i may start cutting hole in it around the brim of my socket, if the  silipos dont work out then we are going to try the OTTO BACK SLEEVE, what my leg man is doing is using me as a guinee pig so to speak and finding out how long and how much stress and wear that we can put on these products, to find out how they hold up,

And i asked him today how much he has spent on my legs and this is the answer i got, 33,000.00 so far and we are not completely finished with them. He has me walking as much as i can now to see how long the system will stand up, for i am wearing a modified LIMB LOGIC VS,  am not using the two socket system, just one socket that is total contact and i mean total contact, i can feel it touching my complete stump on both legs, with the exception on one spot on my left stump at the bottom back i can feel what feels like a hole, and have told him about it and he is going to fix it next week when i go in, and my right stump has shrunk and am wearing a 2 ply sock now and my left one feel llike i need to do the same thing on it tommarrow,

P.S. managed to walk all the way around the block tonight, am tired by my legs feel great, not used to walking on uneven ground like the side of our streets are down here, but will have to get used to it, and also i think that the water in my pool is warm enough to start swimming agian, wil have to check it out in the morning, the last time i checked it, it was a 76 degrees amd that is warm enougjh to get started.

Well i have rambled off enough for one night will keep you all posted on what happens.

I am wondering who is paying for the parts that they are trying on  you while u are being are being a guini pig? did the previous system not work for u or was it not comfortable for you.  I think u should have a say in what u use and not have to pay for something that they know will not work. I do hope they are not charging you for all that stuff that is not working.

stinker, so far the company that made my new legs is footing the bill on all of this stuff that i am trying out and testing for him, was with the pin/lock system and wanted to try the vac system one time to see how well it fit me and my moblity, and i have fell in love with it and i am walking a lot better and further than i have ever done since i lost my legs, so now i am wondering how come i waited so dang long to try this system out.

He wants to use this on some of his other clients, but wants to prove them out before he recomends them to others to use, and as long as they are willing to foot the bill, HEY why not and in the process get me a well fitting set of sockets and a system that really works for me.

For the first time i have been able to walk as far as i did last night with the wife and dog and it was almost 1/2 mile and my legs didnt tire out on me.

They are working with OHIO WILLOW WOOD, on this hoping to solve the problem, any how that is what i got back from them, after i sent them a e-mail telling them just what i thought of thier warranty and how long the sleeve lasted me, so in all i quess that it does pay off to get mad and let them know what you think of thier product, not that i am going to get a new pair of sleeves out of them be cause of my own doing,

I have found out that i have better control of my legs with the vac system, now when i move my stump the leg goes with it and on the pin/lock it didnt move that fast,  and with the RENEGADE MX feet, i am walking a more natural way and not doing the duck walk i was doing before, i now feel the in the near future i will be able to take the wife out and cut a few capers on the dance floor, i havent felt that way since before i  lost my legs.

I am so glad to hear that is working out for you.  The sad part os why didnt they use that system a long time ago.  Now you see how much you missed out on.  You got aZ lot of catching up to do so go and do it and get back to danceing hehehe.

 OWW only started taking orders for the Limblogic system in Sept of 07 and shipping was a month or 2 after that, so its a fairly new system and hence many of the problems.  I agree with Jack 100% the sleeve's a total junk, idea looks good but build is terrible. Im using the Otto Bock Derma Proflex sleeve and really like them much much much better than the OOW sleeves, stronger and more flexable at the sametime. I was going to try the ESP FlexiSport sleeve next http://www.wearesp.com/site/knee.php  if the Otto Bock sleeve didn't work out but I really like the OB sleeve I put on my junky OWW sleeves when i know im going to be crawling around on the ground working on stuff so they are good for something.

 Jack I'm currious to know if and how you solved the leak issues between the pump and socket?, did OWW send out better o-rings or did your prosthetist solve the issue?

tiger, yes we did, OWW,sent my leg man some stuff that we cal RTV, But it was thier brand and if you use anything else it will void the warrranty, i dont get it but right now i have to play ball with them.

Sent OWW a nasty email telling them what i thought of thier sleeve and they are now working with my CPO, to see if there is a way to fix or remanufacture the sleeve so it dont come apart at that point. Havent heard any thing since yesterday, and pobably wont until next tue, for he has taken a long weekend,  so as i stated in a earlier posts, am sitting here with one black leg and one pink legs and the pink leg is holding vac better than the OWW black one, i can hear the vac pump run about twice every 15 mins. so i know that sleeve is starting to go, how much longer i dont know but i recond i will find out shortly.

PLJ - I did a small study at my centre (trying the Ossur Iceflex Endurance, Endolite Sleeve and Silipos Duragel), heres what i found

Sleeve   Average time in use (weeks)   Average User Score
Silipos         7.625                                          5.25/10
Endolite      13.5                                            7.5/10
Iceflex        17                                             9/10
Endurance

The study was only small but it definitely gives a reasonable comparison between the sleeves.

I must say that nowerdays i tend to recommend the Otto Bock Derma Proflex as they have flexion built into the knee, use a resonably soft gel, but are really durable!

Not to much to report as of now, still working with OWW, on the sleeves and they are making good so far with the warranty on them, and they are working on inproving them and have told me that they would let me know as soon as the new ones are ready to be tested out in the field.
Finally got the right liner and it is the ALPHA MAX tapered liner and may what a great feeling i get when it is on, the only problem is getting it on, with the cloth that they us it does not roll on to easy, and i manage to work up a good sweat just getting them on, in the morning. and i am up to wearing a 2 ply sock on both legs now, they told me that i would shrink, but did think it would be that fast,

So i am going to give them a chance to improve thier sleeves before i jump to someone elses sleeve,

PLJ, The Alpha liners will conform to the shape of your stumps with time because of the gel they use to make them... its a really good feature

Peg leg, I think when they are very new they are hard to roll up and down. Once they are broke in they should be OK..I use the Alpha Max too. WOW Mine are $600.00 a piece. We have 80% coverage..Its crazy the prosthetic cost, are you able to get help form the Parity Bill that passed in Texas? Hope your doing well!

Jack,

    If the new OWW sleeves don't turn out to be all you hope they are they set up I'm using works fabulous and allows for least amount of material behind the knee. I'm using the ALPS - PSI liner with a 6/3 taper, the PSI liners don't have material on the upper half of the liner allowing for a silicone to silicone seal with OUT having to roll over the top edge of the liner like OWW has you do with their liners. so you can trim the ALPS sleeves much shorter since you get a good seal just a couple inches above the socket and I find the ALPS, SPI liners very easy to get on, not much harder than putting on a cotton sock. So by using the PSI 6/3 taper liner and the Otto Bock Derma ProFlex sleeve i get a GREAT - ALL DAY seal and only have a total of 5mm of material behind my knee.

Got this from OWW yesterday, they are in the process of reworking the sleeve to make it work better and last longer, and they are going to let me know when they are ready. And they are living up to thier warranty on them. with me anyway dont know about others, for they have told my CPO that the LIMB-LOGIC VS, was not really designed for a bilat like i am so, they and my CPO are using me as a ginnee pig so to state, and am getting a lot of my stuff for nothing, so i am going to stay with OWW, until such time as they dont improve or start or cut back on the warranty.

Snowbear, and yes you have the price right, that is what my CPO has billed MEDICARE, and with my supplement insurance i only have to pay 10% not the 20% MEDICARE calls for. So i have 2400.00 tied up in liners alone, cause i have four of them and use all of them over a weeks time, for i change every other day and wash and let one set dry and relax so to say.

Tiger, after  wearing these for a couple of days they get stretched out and roll on a lot easier, didnt have to work real hard this morning to get them on.

P.S. was told to pass this on to all that have and use OWW products, go to thier web site and click on contact us, and let them know how you feel about what you are using, they want the feed back from us, other wise they dont know for sure if the product is doing what they made it for.

My 2 liners cost us $213.39 we pay 20% not to bad considering the insurance paid over $800.00 But we also pay for the insurance it comes out of my husbands check each week. So he works hard for it. :)

Hi Ann, Amber my dog is doing great she is very loving and full of dogie kisses. I'm almost done with work June 24 is my last day until September 7Th. My husband works for Lockheed Martin he's a scientist. We are doing OK.. Do you still hear form Jim T?

How is your new leg working out. Do you still have volume change? i do its enough to drive me nuts :o But I manage OK.

Hope all is well with you and your family.

Snowbear:

Yes, I do still hear from Jim all the time...do you?  I also hear from Cat once in awhile.   Things have been pretty quiet on here....I love it when I can get Joe A. to write.  Love the way he writes.

Our school got out last Wednesday.  Ahhhhhhhhh yes, my leg...I love, love, love it.  I also purchased the new foot {at least I think it is} echelon...love that bugger too.  You really should try Stans' vacuum system...no change during the day with volume.  I can't say enough about this foot and leg system.  The only thing I don't like is the fact it is so large at the bottom of the leg; there isn't much room to make a small ankle.  Guess I'll have to tolerate that.  I believe PLJ is trying the Ohio Willow version of a vacuum outfit.

Holy Cow, you might know.  I have small ankles & then that's what is to be larger.  Can't win, can you.

I am so glad Amber is doing great & giving lots of doggie kisses... :-*...Tootsie does too.  I know I probably will get in trouble   :(    BUT I would like at least one day our new President would stay off the TV.  Maybe this will fire up the masses I know we have on here.

PLJ,

So far those little devils {Moles} are still digging & we're sticking that Juicy Fruit in the holes  ;D ;D  I'll bet our neighbor thinks we're crazy. ::)

yes Jim T. and I and my husband too email quite a bit. He is a wonderful friend we just get a kick out the things he sends. Not sure if I'm up for a big ankle. Do you get it covered? My leg was to big and had to down size it. Way bigger than my real leg.

Happy the Stan leg is working out for you Ann! :)

Ann and Snowbear, i am indeed try out and wearing the LIMB-LOGIC VS, made by OHIO WILLOW WOOD, and am loving it, just wihed that i had made this move earlier, but have to  learn to slow down abit, rushed it on my excersise and am now paying for it with two sore stumps that swelled up on me big time, that was saturday and sunday, an i am now back into them and walking up a strom, an will probably get on my excersise machine later for about 10 mins and see what happens my CPO said to stay out of the pool for a couple more days, for the strapes on my fins are real tight on the stumps and he is afraid that i might brouse them agian, cant stand setting in a wheel chair at all it drives me nuts, and there isnt much on the old boob tube to watch anymore. so i sit here and vent out my feeling on here to you all. Then he (CPO) said that i might be taking on to much salt and water, and nut there goes my sunflower seeds, love them,
Ann, am glad that you are having good luck with your new ones,
and dont worry about the neighbors, you should see the looks i get when i am on my 42 inch lawn tractor with out my legs on, and the black skid marks on the street in front of my house where they have hit the brakes to stop and look at me, like i am crazy or something, but then agian i must be for doing it.

the only thing i dont like is the fact that i am going to have to put zippers in the legs of my levi's so that i can get them on now, they wont go over my legs any more.

My jeans aren't tight on my legs...just the ankle is alittle too large.  He said he would try and work on that part of the leg.  I guess it bothers me alot more than anyone else.   :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Snowbear:
Yes, I do cover my leg.  I also use a size smaller foot than my real one so I can wear my shoes.  With the cover it makes the shoe too tight & it takes forever to get it on.   :)
I know what you mean, my husband has to put some shoes on for me. Buying only 1 pair of shoes is a real treat for me. As my real leg was 4 sizes different that my good leg! ::) I also cover my leg its a heck of a lot better looking than the one I had. It was very deformed and scared from all the operations.
Snowbear,
I'm sorry you had to go through so much pain before amputation.  I think that's the reason for your pain now.  They told me if I was in pain before I would have a greater chance of pain after they amputate.  I hope you can find something that will take your pain away.  If nothing else maybe there is a medication that will alleviate it without making you a zombie.
Thanks, I had a Major birth defect in my left leg. My leg broke at 8 months old in a cast! At least they told you you would may have pain after the amputation. I was told.. "you will have no more pain and have a life you will have no phantom pain" >:( Yeah right I have a ton of pain and phantom pain worse then ever!  had no choice it was my leg or my life. That Dr. should have never told me that he was so wrong. Oh well life goes on and I do try. I'm a part time teaching  assistant in a second grade class, have a wonderful husband and siblings. I guess I don't really know what pain free life is. I'm pretty lucky and I know it could be a hell of a lot worse. We all do the best we can in life. :) I'll be a LBK 7 years July 14th.. The day my life was saved.
Mine was saved on January 6th.  It will be 8 years this coming year.  Such a shock...never dreamed I would be an amputee....really knocked the breath out of me for awhile.  It was a huge speed bump, but I got over it.
The next time you have to have a leg made, I would really like to see you try out a vacuum outfit.  It doesn't have to be mine, just try one.  I think you would be pleasently surprised  :)  No volume changes is such a relief.
It looks like we are in for some thunder storms today....dreary outside.  But you have a good day.
try this on for size, they  took my left leg on the 5 of march and then my right one had to be taken on the 24 of march same month and year 2002. And it really knocked me for a loop on the morning of the 25 looking down and not seeing any toes sticking up under the blanket,
And it looks like we are in for another hot one today, it is only about nine and it is up in the high eighties already they are saying that it may hit the triple diget today, sure hope not ihave work to do out side, and most of it is in the sunny  side of the house.
Can't do the Vacuum fit been there don that.  have to much nerve and tissue damage from 17 prior operations. I think the operations was a was a way of preparing for the amputation. Ann, cigarettes cause me to loose both of my legs, they caused me to have blood clots in both legs, usually what i have goes up instead of down, but i was lucky on that end of it, my right leg i had a clot in my thigh that we didnt know about and i broken a small piece loose and it went intomy toes that was on a saturaday night and by sunday night my toes were blacker than an ace of spades, and by thursday i had gangarene in my foot so i didnt have much choice in the matter. it had to go to save my life, and i would do it over agian if i had too. The doc's wanted to save my heel on the right side and i ask them what the chances of them not getting all of the gangarene the first time and they told me that it was a 50/50, that in 5 days to 6 months i would be back in and having them cut on me agian, and i said no way that was going to happen and took my finger and pionted it at my head and said that i would come back that way, and then told them to  cut if off up even with my other leg and that way they would get alll of the gangarene and no more operations, found out later that i had made the right decission, cause i have great balance and do not use any aids at all whenwalking.
Just got thourgh with my daily excersices and was on my FITTNESS QUEST EAISY GLIDDER, for ten mins, and have just been able to do that since i got my new legs.
Oh i have problems with PHANTOM PAINS, but am not on any strong pain killers and most of the time, just rubbing both stumps down with a lotion called HORSEMAN'S DREAM, that we get at a tack shop near us and some time take TYERNOL/CODINE 3, so that i can sleep at night, and sometimes that dosent help, like last night it was after 5 in the morning before i went to sleep, hope i do better to night. cause i have to go and see my CPO tommarow for adjustments, cause i have had to buy a new pair of sneakers, and have found out when i change shoes i have to have my feet adjusted to  the new pair. What i like about the HORSEMAN'S DREAM is that you can rub it for a long time and it dosent get hot or burn like the other over the counter linimentes. Do need to go and get some more vit E oil to get rid of a couple of caluses the i have.
Snow, sorry to see that you cant use the VS system, have found that it is more comfortable than the pin/lock that i had before. a little heavier but after getting my legs on and walking some i dont notice the extra wieght
Snow, You can get the best of both by having an Iceross Seal-In Liner.... expensive and complecated to get right, but a great system (gives you a suction leg that needs no suspension sleeves and no lock andp pin either....)
Their new Seal-In X5 is pretty cool but your stump needs to be at least 12-15cm long http://www.ossur.com/pages/11826
Jack,
        Friend of mine just got back from a Limblogic factory rep day at his prosthetists and come to find out the Limblogic units are waterproof enough to shower and swim with. He told me the rep. threw a limblogic unit in a 5 gallon bucket of water and it just ran without any issues.  The rep said that they only test waterproof down to 3 meters (9 feet) so they couldn't put "waterproof" on them because people might try to scuba dive with them. The rep. said that if your unit were to fail due to water damage while swimming or showering that it would be replaced under warranty. However the remote is NOT waterproof.
Yes Snowbear i am, havent had to have it a long time now that i have a pair of sockets that fit me tight and all around and are comfortable. Am planning on going in for a session next month for my migranes for they are coming back on me from stress that is building up on me agian.
Have signed off on my legs and am up to around 3 to 5 miles everyother day with them now. Had a small problem the other day but with my CPO and OHIO WILLOW WOOD, we got it straightened out and both units are working like they should and am doing some expermintation on the sleeves around the bottom where they have you tape them, will let them any all of you know if it works on here. And walking over rough ground is a snap for me now, really like the system and my RENEGADE FEET.
P.S. almost for got to say this, i dont need to got to my accupunturist that much only if and when i need it done and some times can go for 6 months or more before i have to  have it done on me.
Snow, can you stand to have someone wrap their hand around your stump and hold it up, that is what a well fitting VS socket feels like, and it is not just around below the knee, it covers the whole stump with that feeling, the walking pressure is spread out over the entire stump and i believe that is why it is so dang comfortable to wear. Still having some trouble with the sleeves, but we are working with OHIO WILLO WOOD,  on this and hopefully be able to fix it, have found out that the people at OWW, do care and want to make sure that your pro thesits fit and you are happy with them, the other companies that i used their equipment were not always that way, seems like all they want to do is make a bunch of money off of us.
JUST got out of my pool and am setting here relaxing and answering some of the questions put on here and on other sites i go into, and ques what the water is a nice 85 degrees and that sure felt good, swam for about 45 Min's, just to get my daily excercise, which i have been lax on doing, been just too dang hot down here, we are up in the nintier agian to day and it is forcasted the same the rest of the week, so it looks like i am not going to get much done outside or even inside, but will make do and manage somehow and get some of it done.
Also looking into going on a road  trip up into the northeastern WYOMING and western SOUTH DAKOTA, and maybe out in to the central south Dakota to a town i lived in and went to school for 4 years MOBRIDGE, S, DAK. and see if i can find some of my old school mates, and see if the houses we lived in are still there,
No I can't stand it.  :(I have a very sensitive stump. Due to all the prior surgeries I had. The stump has very poor muscle tone, scared, nerve damage, and scare tissue and maybe a neurome. The liner alone is pressure enough. The liner makes me feel like I have pins and needles all day long ::) Its frustrating but liveable. I wear my leg form 7:00AM to about 10:00PM every night. Thanks Ann and Jack..Yes the sensation is 24/7.. BUT as I said its from a birth defect and I have had pain all my life so I'm quite use to it. I have pins and needles 24/7 and phantom zings non stop. I cope pretty well though I guess you don't miss what you never had! ;D
THANKS SNOWBEAR, in a way i can relate to what you are saying and man it sucks buttermilk, for you to have to go through all that pain, especialy 24/7, hopefully in the near future before we all get to old to enjoy it, that they find someway to relieve that for you, have to get in touch with my CPO and OWW, today and i will bring this up with them and see if we cant get something started to help you and others like you, for i know in my mind that there are others that have a simialiar problem.
So take care and a big HUG to you from me, now have to go and get my first cup of coffee, before i go bonkers.
